Key Responsibilities- Review construction plans, specifications, and calculations for compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and other applicable standards.
- Evaluate structural integrity, fire & life safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency of proposed building designs.
- Assess mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to ensure functionality, efficiency, and compliance with relevant codes.
- Communicate with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to resolve plan deficiencies and provide technical guidance.
- Prepare detailed reports outlining review findings, code violations, and recommended corrections.
- Participate in meetings and consultations with internal staff and external stakeholders to discuss project requirements and review processes.
- Stay updated on changes in building codes, regulations, and industry standards to ensure accurate plan assessments.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as zoning and fire departments, to address interdisciplinary aspects of plan reviews.
- Represent the department and interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders, fostering positive and cooperative working relationships and promoting a culture of compliance and safety.
- Perform assigned duties within the supported agency’s guidance, culture, and approach.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Experience:
Three years of increasingly responsible experience in structural design and/or plan checking or construction project management. - Education:
Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major work in structural engineering, civil engineering, architecture or a closely related field. - Possession of a certificate of registration as a professional engineer or as a licensed architect in the State of California. Consideration will be made for those who have passed the FE exam and have obtained the EIT Certification / License.
- Certification as a Residential and Building Plans Examiner, as issued by the International Code Council, is required.
- Strong knowledge of building codes, zoning laws, and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Effective communication abilities, both written and verbal.
- Detail‑oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in using computer‑aided design (CAD) software, Blue Beam Revu and other plan review tools.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to inspection sites as required.
