Job Description and Duties

The Geotechnical Services Branch Chief position is located in the Office of Geotechnical Support. Under the supervision of a Supervising Transportation Engineer the Senior Engineering Geologist (Supervisor) will plan, organize, and direct geologic and geophysical studies for transportation projects. The primary responsibilities include:

  • Provide coordination with District units and the four geotechnical design offices, acting as liaison to clients and developing and tracking the conduct of geophysical testing.
  • Ensure that testing is conducted on schedule and that results are provided to clients within required deadlines.
  • Maintain a valid license as a geologist or geophysicist issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; the license is required for appointment at this level.
  • Assist in determining and establishing quality procedures, standards, and specifications including AASHTO, ASTM, California Test Methods, and Field Procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of geotechnical investigations and design and their role in project delivery.
  • Demonstrate competence in initiating and maintaining positive working relationships and representing Geotechnical Services and Caltrans with tact and diplomacy before state, federal, and local agencies.
Special Requirements

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. The SOQ should be limited to two pages of single‑spaced 12‑point font and should demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • Ability to determine and establish quality procedures, standards, and/or specifications (e.g., AASHTO, ASTM, California Test Methods, Field Procedures).
  • Knowledge of geotechnical investigations and design, and their role in project delivery.
  • Experience with downhole and surface geophysical test methods.
  • Ability to initiate and maintain positive working relationships and competently represent Geotechnical Services and Caltrans with tact and diplomacy with internal and external partners before state, federal, and local agencies.
