Area Bridge Maintenance Engineer (ABME) – Department of Transportation
This position is located in Sacramento, CA and reports to the Branch Chief, Senior Bridge Engineer. The incumbent performs field engineering investigations on the State and Local highway networks statewide, prepares comprehensive written engineering reports, and directs field crews in repair and stabilization of damaged bridges.
Responsibilities- Conduct field investigations in accordance with 23 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 650 Subpart C National Bridge Inspection Standards.
- Develop inspection plans and coordinate field activities.
- Respond to emergency bridge situations, assess structural condition, and direct repair and stabilization work.
- Prepare and submit comprehensive inspection reports to the Branch Chief.
- Assist in the periodic review of bridge inventories and maintenance schedules.
- Registered Civil Engineer in California (Professional Engineering license).
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Experience with bridge inspection, maintenance, and/or design is required.
- Strong knowledge of bridge structural assessment and repair techniques.
- Ability to travel throughout California and work night or irregular hours as needed.
- Valid driver’s license for state vehicle operation.
Pay: $6,488.00 – $12,152.00 per month (Range
D). New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or at the minimum of the alternate range when applicable.
The role requires office work in a climate‑controlled environment and field work at bridge locations across California. Field duties may involve work outdoors, on watercraft, at heights, around traffic, and in varying weather conditions. Travel is typical; approximately two weeks of travel per month is required.
