Summary:
Under the supervision of a Supervising Transportation Engineer, the Senior Engineering Geologist (Supervisor) will plan, organize, and direct geologic and geophysics studies for transportation projects. The primary responsibilities include: coordinating with District units and the four geotechnical design offices, serving as liaison to clients, developing and tracking the conduct of geophysical testing, ensuring testing is conducted on schedule, and providing results to clients in accordance with deadlines.
Incumbent must possess a valid license as a geologist or geophysicist issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists. The license is required for appointment to the Senior Engineering Geologist level.
EligibilityEligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Engineering Geologist exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. WorkingConditions
Position located at 5900 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento, Sacramento County. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in‑person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises.
The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Meeting Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a transcript/degree U.S. equivalency report evaluation.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ)The SOQ serves as documentation of each candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ should be limited to two pages of single‑spaced 12‑point font and should demonstrate proficiency in the following:
- Determining and establishing quality procedures, standards and/or specifications including AASHTO, ASTM, California Test Methods and Field Procedures.
- Knowledge of geotechnical investigations and design, and their role in project delivery.
- Experience with downhole and surface geophysical test methods.
- Initiating and maintaining positive working relationships and representing Caltrans with tact and diplomacy with internal and external partners.
