Senior Engineering Geologist
Geotechnical Services is looking to hire a Branch Chief in the Office of Geotechnical Support. Under the supervision of a Supervising Transportation Engineer the Senior Engineering Geologist (Supervisor) will plan, organize, and direct geologic and geophysics studies for transportation projects. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to provide coordination with District units and the four geotechnical design offices. This will include serving as liaison to clients, and developing and tracking the conduct of geophysical testing.
The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that testing is conducted on schedule, and that the results are provided to the clients in accordance with necessary deadlines. Incumbent must possess a valid license as a geologist or geophysicist issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; the license is required for appointment to the Senior Engineering Geologist level.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Engineering Geologist exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. The SOQ serves as documentation of each candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ should elaborate and demonstrate the applicant’s proficiency in the following:
- Demonstrated ability to determine and establish quality procedures, standards and/or specifications including AASHTO, ASTM, California Test Methods and Field Procedures.
- Knowledge of geotechnical investigations and design, and their role in project delivery.
- Experience with downhole and surface geophysical test methods.
- Demonstrated ability to initiate and maintain positive working relationships and competently represent Geotechnical Services and Caltrans with tact and diplomacy with internal and external partners before state, federal and local agencies.
