Job Description and Duties

Are you an experienced and licensed professional geologist who is enthusiastic about assessing, investigating, and cleaning up contaminated sites? DTSC’s Site Mitigation and Restoration Program is looking for a Senior Engineering Geologist to manage more complicated investigation and cleanup projects such as dry cleaners, abandoned mine sites, and industrial facilities. The selected candidate will also serve as a mentor to other DTSC staff.

As a Senior Engineering Geologist you will have the opportunity to:

  • Oversee the assessment, investigation, and remedial work performed by responsible parties or state contractors for the most complex hazardous substance release and hazardous waste sites
  • Oversee and implement the investigation and cleanup of complex hazardous substance release and/or hazardous waste sites under the cleanup process applicable to each site, which may be the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), RCRA Corrective Action, or other processes under the California Health and Safety Code
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to verify compliance with approved workplans, specifications, and technical procedures
  • Manage administrative elements required for project implementation, including cost estimates, project budgets and schedules, contracts, permits, interagency agreements, and cost recovery
  • Mentor and provide consultative guidance and support to other DTSC staff on DTSC policies and procedures and geologic aspects of site investigation and remedial work
Desirable Qualifications We Look For:
  • Licensed Professional Geologist in California
  • Demonstrated job experience with assessment, investigation, and/or cleanup of sites
  • Demonstrated job experience with application of scientific principles and industry standards relating to the investigation and cleanup processes for CERCLA and/or RCRA sites
  • Demonstrated job experience with preparing project budgets, resource projections, schedules, cost estimates, tracking of project activities, and/or preparing briefings/updates for upper management
  • Demonstrated experience with mentoring staff, providing leadership and/or training on technical topics related to site investigation/cleanup processes, and/or participation in work groups for guidance development

Working Conditions

A hybrid telework schedule may be available for this position. Two office days minimum via hybrid telework program.
