The Job
San Bernardino County is seeking dedicated Maintenance Workers (Public Service Employees) to support the operation and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. In this role, you will assist with a range of routine field and facility maintenance tasks to help ensure reliable service to our communities. These positions are extra‑help, non‑regular roles classified as Public Service Employees. Assignments are temporary and are expected to last up to 12 months, with schedules of up to 29 hours per week.
Conditionsof Employment
- Work must involve heavy manual labor outdoors in varying weather conditions; work in desert and mountainous areas, remote locations, and other locations as needed; ability to drive in all weather conditions; work weekends and holidays and respond to emergency calls as needed.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and have ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend over, and crawl for extended periods in performance of job duties.
- Health and Physical: candidates must meet health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of duties as established by the San Bernardino County Public Works Department.
- Travel: travel throughout the County is required; a division vehicle will be available. A valid CA driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance is required at time of appointment.
- Sponsorship:
San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.
- License: possession of a valid CA Class A driver license.
- Certification: any CA State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) water certifications.
- Experience:
six (6) months of maintenance experience in a water/wastewater facility. - Education:
six (6) semester units from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, or Water/Wastewater Technology. - Other: candidates with any combination of the above are encouraged to apply, as are candidates with the ability to perform heavy manual labor, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.

These extra‑help, non‑regular positions classified as Public Service Employees receive no benefits and are temporary for up to 12 months with variable weekly hours. Successful candidates shall be considered at‑will throughout the term of their employment and will not attain regular status.
