Ensure regulated establishments produce safe products by executing inspection methods, documenting non‑compliance, and initiating enforcement actions when warranted. - Verify that meat and poultry slaughter and/or processing establishments’ SSOP and HACCP plans meet regulatory requirements.
- Execute SSOP and HACCP plans to prevent unsanitary conditions and product adulteration.
- Review records, observe plant operations, and conduct hands‑on verification to ensure compliance, preparing detailed non‑compliance records.
- Determine when regulatory control action is necessary, assessing corrective actions and enforcement needs.
- Conduct regulatory oversight for other consumer protections such as economic adulteration and misbranding.
- Communicate with plant managers and owners to explain legal and regulatory requirements.
- Defend determinations on non‑compliance issues and discuss remediation plans.
- Collaborate with individuals to resolve issues and clarify HACCP and food safety interpretations.
- Advise Agency inspectors, supervisors, and officers on inspection and enforcement matters.
- Conduct samplings, surveys, and tests to gather data on problem areas and industry trends.
- Perform health and safety verification sampling and testing for microbes, residues, or contaminants.
- Ensure imported products comply with all applicable Federal regulations.
- Authorize entry of compliant products or refuse entry of non‑compliant items.
- Coordinate with other Federal agencies on animal health restrictions and refused entry lots.
- Training as a condition of employment is required; complete within 90 days of selection and within 12 months.
- Subject to satisfactory background investigation and fingerprint check.
- May be subject to one‑year probationary period.
- Successful completion of a pre‑employment medical examination.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Selective Service Registration statement.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- May need to complete an OF‑306 declaration for Federal employment.
- False statements can jeopardize employment and result in disciplinary action.
- Must be able to read, speak, write, and effectively communicate in English.
- This is a Bargaining Unit position.
Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the work of a consumer safety inspector or similar position at the next lower level by the closing date.
- Experience should include at least two of the following skills: sampling and field testing, written reporting and oral findings, and maintaining effective personal contacts.
- For GS‑05 level: 52 weeks of qualifying experience under close supervision, with knowledge of regulated commodities and related duties.
- For GS‑07 level: 52 weeks of independent routine assignments on regulated commodities.
- For GS‑08 level and above: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the respective GS level.
Experience may be acquired through roles such as consumer safety inspector, inspection aid, food inspector, public health inspector, or quality inspection specialist.
Education- At least a bachelor’s degree in a related science field (agricultural, biological, physical sciences, food technology, etc.) or equivalent combination of education and specialized experience.
