Position
Senior Deputy Probation Officer – County of Ventura
Compensation and Benefits- A general salary increase (GSI) of 3.5% effective July 5, 2026.
- Educational Incentive – 2.5% for an Associate’s degree, 3.5% for a Bachelor’s degree, or 5% for a Graduate degree.
- Annual Leave – 112 hours per year, increasing to 152 hours after 5 years of service.
- Deferred Compensation – Eligible to participate in the County’s 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or Section 457 Plan; up to a 2.5% match on 401(k) contributions.
- Health Plans – Flexible credit allowance of up to $16,692 per year for medical, dental, and/or vision insurance.
- Flexible Spending Accounts – Pre‑tax benefit for eligible medical, dental, and vision expenses.
- Pension Plan – Participation in the County’s defined pension plan and potential reciprocity with other public retirement systems.
- Bilingual Incentive – Proficiency levels: $0.69/hr (Level I), $1.38/hr (Level II), or $2.81/hr (Level III).
- Holidays – 12 paid days per year, including a floating holiday.
- Uniform Allowance – $1,050 on November 1 of each year.
- Textbook and Tuition – Up to $2,000 per fiscal year in accordance with the memorandum of agreement.
- Armed Unit Premium Pay – Up to 8.5% of base hourly pay for personnel authorized to carry a firearm during assigned duties.
The Senior Deputy Probation Officer assists the supervisor in overseeing daily unit operations and may act as the supervising deputy in their absence. Responsibilities span field, investigative, specialty, and juvenile facilities assignments, requiring broad agency knowledge and a commitment to the Agency’s mission.
Examples of Duties- Assists in staff training and development.
- Performs case management duties, including assessment, planning, linking, monitoring and advocacy for juveniles and adults.
- Implements supervision plans and enforces court orders for probationers.
- Develops case plans and makes recommendations to the court for rehabilitation and placement.
- Acts as shift leader or Watch Commander coordinating daily activities in an institution.
- May assume supervisory tasks in the absence of a supervisor, assigning work and ensuring compliance with policy.
- Orients new residents or detainees.
- Assists in resolving routine staff and client problems.
- Conducts investigations and prepares reports.
- Uses risk and needs assessment instruments.
- Conducts arrests and fourth‑waiver searches.
- Makes field contacts in homes and communities.
- Collaborates with other law‑enforcement agencies for field work.
- Handles medical, security, or disciplinary emergencies when required.
- Performs duties of lower‑level classes as needed.
Entrance requirements to the examination process and an assurance of applicable knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs).
Education/Experience- Bachelor’s degree and at least three (3) years of experience as a Deputy Probation Officer.
- OR five (5) years of experience as a Deputy Probation Officer.
Applicants must be willing and able to work any shift, including rotating shifts, holidays, weekends, and overtime.
NecessarySpecial Requirements
- No felony convictions.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California driver’s license.
- Flexible work schedule across field, correctional facilities, or office environments.
- Required to complete specified officer safety training courses and maintain proficiency in Agency‑approved tactics.
- Probationary period of 1,040 hours for newly appointed Sr. DPOs, contingent on satisfactory performance.
- Interview and investigative techniques.
- Evidence‑based behavioral science principles and their application to casework.
- Report‑writing principles, including correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal‑justice laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances for juvenile and adult probation.

- Case‑management methods and techniques.
- Community‑based policing principles.
