Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Senior Environmental Planner in the Cultural Studies Office, the incumbent reviews cultural resources management reports for statewide consistency with the Section 106 Programmatic Agreement and the Public Resource Code 5024 Memorandum of Understanding. They maintain the statewide historic bridges inventory, tracking National Register eligible bridges and identifying the need for future updates. Working independently or as a member of an interdisciplinary team, the incumbent is responsible for carrying out a wide variety of historic studies and planning activities designed to support the department’s missions and to satisfy state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations as applied to transportation projects and programs.

The incumbent works closely with historical archaeologists, Senior Environmental Planners, Environmental Scientists, and other environmental staff; provides direct assistance to other units; reviews or assists in creation of environmental compliance documents; provides guidance to the regions and districts on technical and compliance issues; develops manuals and guidance; conducts training; and may serve in a lead capacity over other Caltrans staff or student assistants.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Associate Environmental Planner (Architectural History) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment.
