Recruiting for Probation Officers who handle juvenile and adult caseloads. Incumbents are peace officers responsible for investigating offenses and social histories, writing reports, making recommendations, supervising and counseling probationers, post‑release community supervision and mandatory supervision clients. They conduct field investigations.
Eligibility will be determined for the highest level within the series.

Training / Advancement- Probation Officer I (Trainee) are eligible for promotion to Probation Officer II upon meeting requirements and receiving a satisfactory work progress report. Must be promoted within 18 months or be terminated.
Job‑specific benefits include Summary of Benefits and Memoranda of Understanding (MOU).
Conditions of Employment- Peace Officer Status: may require being armed. Peace Officers must participate in force training, including control of aggression, tactical negotiations, unarmed defensive tactics and use of pepper spray. Must enroll in arming training, Field Training Officer program and maintain qualification. Will be required to accept an armed assignment at discretion of authority.
- Shift Work: positions may require various shifts, holidays, weekends, overtime.

Body Art Policy: while on duty, body art must be concealed as per policy.
Travel: required valid California Class C driver license, proof of automobile liability insurance, age 21 (20½ testing). Must meet Peace Officer Requirements and education/experience requirements for the relevant option.
Education and Experience Options – Probation Officer I- Option 1: Bachelor's degree from a college or university. No experience required.
- Option 2: 30 semester (45 quarter) units of coursework in psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice or related behavioral science. Half of units must be upper division.
- Option 3: Associate’s degree in relevant field. 18 months full‑time experience as a San Bernardino County Probation Corrections Officer.
- Option 4: High school, GED, or prep. Three years full‑time experience as a San Bernardino County Probation Corrections Officer.
- Must meet the education and experience requirements in one of the above options for Probation Officer I and have one year experience as a Juvenile Correctional Officer, Parole Agent, professional casework or group work that included counseling and complex treatment assignments.
- Degrees must be accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting association.
- Employment or vocational counseling is not qualifying experience.
- List of coursework or transcripts must be submitted with the application if qualifying under Option 2.
- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for equivalency.
- Be successful on Written Test, Physical Agility Test, and Department Interview.
- Pass background investigation including fingerprint, psychological testing, polygraph (except current employees).
- Be at least 21 years of age at hire (20½ at testing) and possess high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Provide official sealed transcripts of completed college coursework.
- Show proof of required basic certified training (PC 832, etc.) or meet obligation within first year.
- Legally authorized to work in U.S. per Government Code 1031.
- Possess valid Class C Driver License and proof of automobile liability insurance.
- Meet minimum vision and hearing requirements; tests administered.
- Pass treadmill and medical test.
Testing tentatively takes place the week of February 2, 2026. Test dates subject to change; candidates will be contacted approximately two weeks prior for self‑schedule. In‑person proctored computer assessment will include written communication, reading comprehension, applying rules, basic math.
