IMPORTANT

This recruitment is primarily focused on hiring on‑call Dispatchers on an as‑needed basis. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications of the position, attach the required documents, and successfully pass all components of the examination process in order to move forward in the selection process.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Dispatchers must submit, in addition to the City’s application, a certified typing certificate obtained within the last 12 months demonstrating a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute (wpm) net.

A. Dispatcher/Telecommunications Certification is required for Dispatcher II. Failure to provide the required documents will result in disqualification.

HOURLY WAGE INFORMATION
  • Dispatcher I: $27.89 – $34.79 per hour
  • Dispatcher II: $32.31 – $40.34 per hour

Dispatchers hired on an on‑call/as‑needed basis start at the first step of the range for their position.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

  • Written Exam – Pass the POST Entry‑Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery with a score of 50 or above.
  • Qualifications Appraisal Interviews – Must score 70% or above to be assigned to an eligibility list.
SELECTION PROCESS
  • Chief’s Interview – Determine readiness to join the department.
  • Background Check – Extensive review of candidate history.
  • Psychological Examination – Evaluate ability to handle job stresses.
  • Medical Examination – Assess ability to perform essential duties.
DEFINITION

Under supervision (Dispatcher I) or general supervision (Dispatcher II), perform a variety of duties involved in the operation of emergency services systems and communication devices to receive, route, relay, and dispatch calls for emergency and non‑emergency law enforcement, ambulance, fire, and other services.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Receive calls for service; obtain information; enter data into CAD system; determine nature and location of emergency; dispatch units as necessary; maintain contact with calling party; relay pertinent information.

Maintain contact with units; log field calls and units dispatched; stay aware of prior shift activities.

Use telecommunications systems to coordinate calls and relay requests among agencies; perform record keeping and general clerical work; operate equipment including telephones, radios, computer, CAD, NCIC, fax, dicta phone, copier, and more.
