Position: RELIEF MENTAL HEALTH PSYCHIATRIST
Location: California

Job Overview

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is seeking emergency Relief Mental Health Psychiatrists to respond to the County’s declared state of emergency for homelessness. Applicants will be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days with the opportunity for permanent County employment.

Responsibilities
  • Render professional medical services in a mental health setting on an hourly as‑needed basis.
  • Perform a full range of professional psychiatric services requiring completion of an approved residency in psychiatry.
  • Act as clinical lead for a multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Provide psychosocial and psychiatric assessment, treatment recommendations, linkage, navigation, advocacy and consultation services for Office of Diversion and Re‑entry clients.
  • Consult with physicians and other clinical staff to develop care plans tailored to individual needs, considering diagnoses and legal stipulations.
  • Provide psychiatry services and consultations with community‑based providers for clients with co‑occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Review records from criminal justice and mental health systems when making treatment recommendations.
  • Screen for health‑related concerns and perform psychiatric evaluations.
  • Develop comprehensive treatment plans.
  • Evaluate individuals to determine probable cause for detention under WIC 5150.
  • Provide clinical consultation to other medical providers and staff, including interns and residents, regarding treatment interventions, medical and diagnostic work performed and participate in case conferences.
  • Perform medication support services by evaluating need for psychotropic medications.
  • Prescribe, administer and monitor medications.
  • Order, obtain, review and monitor pertinent laboratory tests.
  • Participate in quality of care and provide input for corrective action plans to mitigate future clinical risk.
  • Testify in court as expert witness as needed.
Minimum Requirements
  • Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in psychiatry or equivalent training.*
Licensing and Credentials

California State Physician and Surgeons certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California. Valid California Class C driver’s license or alternative transportation method.

Physical Classification:
Light

This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort, occasional light lifting up to 10 lb and some bending, stooping, squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Assessment Process

At the end of the initial work period, an evaluation of performance will be conducted. Those with passing score will be considered for permanent appointment.

Eligibility and Verification
