Job #551695 – Permanent, full‑time position in the Department of Athletics with a one‑year probationary period.
Salary Range: $4,213–$8,130 monthly.
Position Summary
Under the lead work direction of the Head Athletic Trainer and general supervision of the Athletic Director, the Athletic Trainer I provides the full range of clinical athletic training functions for student‑athletes during training and competition, in accordance with NCAA and NATA guidelines. Responsibilities include injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, and coverage of practices and contests, including evenings, weekends, and travel.
Injury Treatment / Rehabilitation (40%)
- Prevent, recognize, and assess athletic injuries.
- Use a variety of therapeutic modalities in accordance with physician orders including heat, cold, light, sound, and electricity, and rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
- Apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries.
- Inform coaching staff and other health professionals on injury status and treatment plans.
- Implement rehabilitation programs using appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments.
- Monitor rehabilitation plans and progress.
- Assist with and assign student‑athletes for therapy as needed.
- Consult with senior Athletic Trainers, physicians, and other health‑care staff on injuries and treatment plans and coordinate with coaching staff.
- Maintain equipment and cleanliness of the athletic training and rehabilitation facilities.
Evaluation / Prevention / Conditioning of Injuries (20%)
- Regularly evaluate the physical condition of student‑athletes; advise on injury prevention and maintenance of physical condition.
- Counsel athletes and staff on conditioning, athletic training, and rehabilitation.
- Assist in designing conditioning programs to prevent injuries.
Home & Away Game & Practice Health Care (15%)
- Attend practices and athletic events to provide medical emergency coverage to student‑athletes.
- Travel with sports teams to away games as needed.
Administrative Recordkeeping (10%)
- Maintain updated files and accurate medical records for athletic injuries, medical insurance, medical history, injury referrals, conditioning programs, schedules, and other data.
Clinical Coordination & Sanitation (10%)
- Coordinate clinical and physical appointments between athletes and SHC or outside referrals.
- Inform coaching staff and other health‑care professionals regarding injury status and treatment plans.
- Daily control of infection and sanitation of the training room by cleaning and disinfecting all equipment, floors, and tables.
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Head Athletic Trainer or Athletic Director.
General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation.
- Full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use.
- Knowledge of taping, bracing, and therapeutic massage techniques.
- Effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
- Understanding of NCAA and NATA regulations regarding student‑athletes, sports medicine care, and health and safety.
- Adherence to OSHA standards for blood‑borne pathogens.
- Maintenance of medical records, including HIPAA standards.
- Follow insurance procedures.
Skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective relationships with athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians, and other health professionals.
Ability To
- Determine appropriate referrals for athletes.
- Recognize life‑threatening situations and provide emergency aid.
- Use a computer for medical, insurance, and record‑keeping functions.
- Work in an environment with competing priorities.
- Communicate with coaches and student‑athletes about injuries and rehabilitation plans.
- Work outdoors under varied weather conditions.
- Communicate effectively with a diverse population, in writing and verbally.
Minimum Qualifications
- Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Current CPR/AED certification under NATABOC guidelines.
