Job Description and Duties

Under general supervision, operations include fire apparatus and equipment during wildland and structural firefighting operations; lead an assigned crew in firefighting duties; maintain and make minor repairs on vehicles, equipment, and the fire stations; perform fire prevention tasks, and other related work. In a paramedic position, as part of a paramedic team, perform paramedic duties in emergency medical situations.

Drive and operate fire apparatus in connection with extinguishing wildland, structural and other fires, as well as fire prevention and rescue work; lead a crew; perform maintenance and simple repairs on equipment; make reports on the operation of equipment; use maps; operate two‑way radio as necessary; may act as fire captain relief; assist in training crews to fight fire efficiently and safely;

check, clean, and polish trucks; perform general facility maintenance and repair work; assist in building roads, trails, telephone lines, and minor structures; as a learner, may operate other heavy equipment to assist when required; make fire law inspections; investigate fire causes; prepare and present fire prevention programs to the public; keep records and prepare reports. Perform work outside with potential exposure to environmental elements (e.g., extreme weather, poison oak).

When working in a paramedic position, render emergency medical assistance at the advanced life support level; perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and electrical defibrillation; lift and transport injured persons; administer intravenous fluids as needed; obtain blood for laboratory analysis; interpret cardiac arrhythmias; perform pulmonary ventilation with airway adjuncts; administer drugs; operate voice and biomedical telemetry communication systems and equipment; assist in childbirth; drive medical rescue vehicles under emergency conditions;

prepare and complete documentation associated with patient care delivery; prepare and present demonstrations and classes in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other subjects relating to medical assistance to employees and the public.
