Job Summary

Under the supervision of the registered physical therapist, administers therapeutic modalities with the use of specialized equipment; instructs the patient and supervises established therapeutic exercise, functional activities, and fits and instructs patients in the use of orthopedic appliances.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Patient Health Care:
    Instruct patients on general health and basic self‑care procedures, review physician orders, apply orthopedic appliances and dressings, monitor vital signs, initiate emergency procedures, assist with ambulation and exercises, conduct group exercise classes, evaluate patient response, and administer prescribed physical therapy treatments.
  • Equipment and Instruments:
    Ensure equipment availability, set up traction and instruments, stock and restock rooms, clean and sterilize instruments, perform preventive maintenance, inspect for damage, and maintain equipment in good working order.
  • Records and Patient Information:
    Collect data, review charts, maintain charts, complete processing forms, record and chart patient data, take medical histories, consult with physicians, issue reports, perform accurate measurements, maintain current records, prepare workload statistics, and compile cumulative data.
  • Materials and Supplies:
    Order supplies, dispose expendable medical supplies, and maintain current licensure/certificates.
  • Administrative and Other:
    Participate in developing and conducting in‑service programs, demonstrate safety procedures, coordinate and monitor activities, train students and new personnel, answer call lights and telephones, provide functional direction to staff, attend conferences, and serve as resource person to co‑workers.
  • Patient Procedures and

    Activities:

    Explain test procedures and purpose, assemble patient education materials, demonstrate equipment, instruct patients in care and maintenance, assist provider in examinations, consult with provider, follow infection control, lift patients, monitor patient condition during and after procedures, take and record vital signs, and transport patients to and from procedure areas.
  • Other Activities and Responsibilities:
    Assume other activities and responsibilities as directed.
Basic Qualifications
  • Experience:

    Successful completion of clinical competencies during internship.
  • Education:

    Graduation from an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant Program with an Associate or Science degree in Physical therapy or California Examining Committee equivalent.
  • License, Certification, Registration:
    Physical Therapist Assistant Certificate (California).
