Job DescriptionThe Support Services Assistant (Interpreter) will facilitate accurate, effective and impartial communications using sign language for hearing impaired and severely speech impaired incarcerated people. The SSAI reports to the Institution’s American Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator and is indirectly supervised by the Warden.
Key Responsibilities- Provide sign language interpreting services for incarcerated people via telephone, in person, email, pager and videoconferencing, including during disciplinary, classification, health care, appeals, educational, parole, and attorney visits.
- Interpret for incarcerated people in the Incarcerated People Disciplinary Process, Administrative Segregation Unit Placements, Classification Committee Process, Computation Review Process, Health Care Delivery, Caseworker contacts, Appeals Process, Education Programs, Board Hearings, and related parole proceedings.
- Interview hearing impaired and severely speech impaired incarcerated people to determine their methods of communication.
- Respond promptly to requests for sign language interpreting communications in all supported modes.
- Travel to other correctional institutions if required by CDCR.
- Serve as a resource for effective communication in emergencies; overtime may be necessary.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and departmental ADA laws, regulations, policies and procedures and align with the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
Minimum requirements are outlined in the Class Specification. Candidates must meet these prerequisites prior to interview and appointment.
CompensationBase salary for positions A, B, and C ranges from $4,266.00 to $6,096.00 per annum, plus a $2,500 per pay period allowance for the American Sign Language interpreter role.
