The LA County Board of Supervisors recently declared a local state of emergency for homelessness. The County is working to revise and expand our response to help all who are affected. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to help us in the mission of addressing issues like housing, mental health, and substance use. Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Psychiatric Social Worker II vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.

Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Psychiatric Social Worker II.

Responsibilities
  • Interviews individuals, their families and/or significant others to obtain a full history (family, social, employment, medical, substance abuse and mental health treatment).
  • Assesses client functioning in the environmental setting.
  • Develops a Client Care Coordination Plan (CCCP) to resolve or cope with mental or emotional problems, including counseling, case management, and referrals to other treatment sources.
  • Determines duration of therapy, priorities, methods, and modification of treatment goals over time.
  • Provides psychotherapy to individuals, groups, families, and significant others.
  • Provides case management to secure resources to achieve treatment goals.
  • Assists clients and families by discussing reactions and attitudes concerning mental health problems and co-occurring substance abuse disorders; explains need for treatment and encourages collaboration.
  • Works with families to gain acceptance and participation in treatment recommendations.
  • Interviews individuals seeking psychiatric assistance on an emergency basis and uses crisis intervention techniques to prevent hospitalization.
  • Serves as a member of mental health emergency intervention teams and evaluates behavior to determine danger to self/others or grave disability.
  • Initiates 72-hour detention procedures at a hospital facility and schedules evaluation or makes referrals as needed.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary team conferences to discuss client problems and progress.
  • Participates in or supervises social work student affiliate programs; assesses student progress and development.
  • Provides in-service training and participates in mental health training programs for students and staff.
  • Instructs community agencies on utilizing mental health principles to identify and treat problems.
  • Participates in or conducts research to improve knowledge and treatment methods.
  • Reviews treatment authorization requests and recommends approval/denial per contract requirements.
Minimum Requirements
  • LICENSE: A valid and active license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences.

  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • PHYSICAL CLASS: Physical Class II – Light. Light physical effort, occasional lifting to 10 pounds, bending, stooping, or squatting; considerable ambulation may be involved.
