Supervising Data Center Technician
Location:
Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)
Ensure efficient use of computer resources, oversee monitoring and maintenance of data center systems, and supervise data center personnel.
Compensation & BenefitsHourly salary: $40.44 – $49.53.

- Supervise and coordinate computer input flow to ensure efficient use of equipment.
- Monitor and analyze network activity and system components using tools such as Nagios, Cricket, Aruba, BMC, and Watch List.
- Identify and resolve issues with Airwave wireless devices, coordinating with vendors as needed.
- Monitor problems in the District’s Data Center, Disaster Recovery Data Center, and Out‑of‑State Data Center.
- Coordinate activities to meet production‑schedule commitments.
- Analyze software and scheduling requirements, ensuring deadlines are met.
- Collaborate with application and programming personnel on computer problems.
- Participate in selection, training, and performance evaluation of data center staff.
- Maintain records of machine usage, equipment, and software system malfunctions.
- Log and track incident requests for service changes, assets, and inventory.
- Establish and revise maintenance‑inspection schedules, liaising with maintenance personnel.
- Prepare and supervise detailed procedures for computer operations.
- Analyze current and proposed operations for feasibility and recommend improvements.
- Reschedule shift operations to maximize workload efficiency.
- Monitor and report on school network issues with routers, switches, servers, and T‑1 lines.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Promotional status required – current or retired LAUSD employee with minimum 130 paid days in regular status or permanent status, or laid‑off within past 39 months.
- High school graduation or equivalent proficiency.
- Thirty semester units of college‑level computer‑related courses, or one year of experience to substitute.
- Three years of experience operating mainframe/server and open systems consoles, including one year with a medium‑scale or larger computer using a multiprogramming OS, plus six months with District network‑monitoring tools.
- A+ or Network+ certification.
- Valid California driver's license and ability to use a motor vehicle.
- Strong background in data center operations and cloud infrastructure.
- Proficiency with monitoring programs such as Infosim, Net Scout, Aruba, and Watch List.
- Experience with multiple operating systems.
- Ability to develop operating procedures and manage team performance.
- Flexibility for 24/7 operations and physically active environment.
- Mainframe/open systems and peripheral hardware, operating system software.
- Word processing, spreadsheets, e‑mail, and scheduling software.
- ITIL best practices.
- Computer operating systems, TCP/IP networking, routing, fundamentals.
- Nagios, Cricket, BMC, Tivoli, etc.
- Windows and UNIX administration.
- Program management, record design.
- Analyze job requirements and equipment capabilities.
- Effective communication skills.
- Supervise, train, evaluate equipment operators.
- Respond to emergencies caused by hardware/software problems.
- Operate computers and peripherals, write Unix shell scripts.
- Research and organize technical material.
- Interpret technical reports clearly.
- Work effectively with others.
- Produce concise reports.
- Describe network problems in plain terms.
- Monitor network activities and systems.
- Assist with configuration of network monitoring tools.
- Manage multiple concurrent tasks.
