Position Summary
Are you a highly regarded, experienced peace officer in California with a proven track record of success in law enforcement looking to make a lateral transfer? The Sheriff's Office is seeking self‑motivated, law‑enforcement professionals to fill the position of Deputy Sheriff
.
As a Deputy Sheriff with the County of San Luis Obispo, you are responsible for patrolling assigned areas to maintain order and protect life and property. Your duties include:
- Responding to scenes of disturbances, accidents, or reported crimes
- Conducting preliminary investigations, issuing citations, and arresting lawless persons
- Serving warrants and other legal papers, escorting and transporting criminals and psychologically challenged individuals, and participating in raids
- Acting as bailiff in Superior Court or Municipal Court when required
The County offers attractive pay and benefits for lateral employees, including:
- $3,000 bilingual bonus and a monthly bilingual stipend

- Accelerated vacation accrual based on related experience
- High school graduation or equivalent (GED)
- Current POST basic certification
- A valid California driver's license at all times
- Valid driver's license upon application and during employment
- The employed class must be closely related and comparable in duties and qualifications
- Employee must have worked for another public agency within one year prior to application
- Permanent status was obtained via an eligible, competitive or promotional examination
- Written confirmation of satisfactory employment record and no fault-based separation
- Possible oral examination by the appropriate board
- Medical requirements must be met
- Individuals placed on the eligible list in order of approval
