Under the supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel, we are seeking a skilled and motivated attorney to perform complex legal work across multiple areas of law in support of departmental operations and programs.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, correspondence, and other legal documents
- Provide oral and written legal advice to departmental management and staff
- Analyze legislation, regulations, and policy proposals affecting departmental programs
- Draft, review, and implement regulations in collaboration with departmental staff
- Review contracts, leases, subpoenas, and departmental documents for legal sufficiency
- Analyze and respond to California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests
- Serve as liaison with the California Attorney General on litigation matters, including pleadings, discovery, and hearings
- Represent the department in administrative proceedings and select court matters, as needed
Note:
If selected for an interview, candidates will be required to submit two professional writing samples
- Strong ability to research, analyze, and apply legal principles, facts, and precedents
- Sound judgment and the ability to assess complex situations and adopt effective courses of action
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to clearly present facts, law, and legal arguments
- Experience drafting legal opinions, pleadings, regulations, rulings, and legislation
- Ability to prepare professional correspondence explaining legal matters
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and maintain trust and confidence
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities
