The Scale Operator is responsible for accurately weighing incoming and outgoing vehicles at the Transfer Stations and landfill, while ensuring proper documentation of all transactions. This role serves as the first point of contact for customers, providing excellent customer service while enforcing landfill policies and procedures. The Scale Operator maintains precise records for regulatory compliance, assists with traffic flow, and communicates effectively with site staff to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Attention to detail, reliability, and basic computer skills are essential to succeed in this role.
- Weigh incoming and outgoing trucks to determine the tonnage of solid waste.
- Observe incoming trucks to ensure that solid waste is properly covered and acceptable for receipt at the landfill or transfer station.
- Verify residency or authorization of customers prior to disposal.
- Maintain accurate records, including vehicle identification and transaction information.
- Process customer payments, including credit card transactions, accurately and efficiently.
- Answer telephone inquiries and respond to questions from customers and Member City residents.
- Follow and promote safe work practices at all times.
- Perform general site cleanup and maintenance as directed.
- Ensure delivered waste complies with applicable rules, regulations, and landfill policies.
- Assist with other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Basic math skills to accurately calculate weights and fees.
- Ability to operate computer systems and process transactions, including credit card payments.
- Strong attention to detail to maintain accurate records and verify customer information.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills for interacting with customers, residents, and coworkers.
- Ability to observe and enforce safe work practices.
- Physical ability to perform general site cleanup and handle routine site tasks.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations related to solid waste disposal is preferred.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Driving a District vehicle for business may be required. Employees required to drive as part of their job duties are responsible for maintaining a current, valid, and vehicle - appropriate driver’ s license of their resident state. This position requires minimum physical exertion with daily lifting requirements up to 10 pounds. Significant finger dexterity required. Working conditions include exposure to weather and odor.
Subject to shift work. Activities may include picking up trash, carrying office materials, pulling and pushing file drawers and organizing paperwork.
