Job Description

About the Opportunity

Tnemec Company, Inc., a privately held manufacturer of high-performance protective coatings and linings since 1921, is seeking an experienced Corporate Safety Manager to lead our company-wide occupational safety and health programs.

We are looking for a leader, not simply a safety program administrator.

We welcome applications from experienced professionals throughout the United States who are willing to relocate to the Kansas City area. Relocation support is offered for qualified candidates.

The right candidate will bring strong technical expertise, sound judgment, integrity, and the ability to positively influence people at every level of the organization. Success in this position requires building relationships, establishing accountability, challenging unsafe practices, developing effective solutions, and driving measurable improvements in safety performance.

Safety is a responsibility shared by everyone  Corporate Safety Manager provides the leadership, expertise, and direction that help employees, supervisors, and management fulfill that responsibility.

This position reports directly to the Director of Technical and Regulatory Affairs and is based at our North Kansas City manufacturing facility, with company-wide responsibilities and occasional travel to other locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and continuously improve Tnemec's company-wide safety and occupational health programs, establishing clear expectations, measurable objectives, and accountability.
  • Strengthen safety culture through employee engagement, supervisor coaching, cross-functional safety teams, and proactive identification and elimination of workplace hazards.
  • Drive measurable improvements in safety performance, including reducing OSHA recordable injuries, lost-time incidents, and workers' compensation claims through effective prevention and corrective actions.
  • Lead workplace incident and near-miss investigations, identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and verify their effectiveness.
  • Coordinate workers' compensation activities, including incident reporting, claim review, case management coordination, return-to-work support, and analysis of injury trends.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain OSHA-compliant safety programs, including Hazard Communication, lockout/tagout, confined spaces, respiratory protection, machine guarding, and powered industrial truck safety.
  • Conduct facility safety assessments, job hazard analyses, industrial hygiene evaluations, and risk assessments. Identify practical improvements that reduce exposure and operational risk.
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, Human Resources, and facility leadership to integrate safety into everyday activities, equipment changes, and operational decisions.
  • Establish and monitor leading and lagging safety performance indicators, communicate results to management, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead safety training, emergency preparedness, contractor safety, and fire and life safety initiatives.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to assigned safety personnel and coordinate safety activities across company facilities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Approximately 7–10 years of progressively responsible occupational safety and health experience, preferably in chemical, coatings, or industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead safety programs, influence operational decisions, hold people accountable, and achieve measurable results.
  • Previous experience leading safety personnel, cross-functional initiatives, or multi-site safety programs is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA general industry regulations, hazard recognition, incident investigation, risk management, and industrial hygiene principles.
  • Experience with workers' compensation administration, injury management, and return-to-work coordination is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong personal integrity, resilience, initiative, sound judgment, and a willingness to learn and continuously improve.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or comparable professional certification is preferred.
