Clinical Services Manager I – Nursing Supervisor – San Mateo Medical Center

Join the County of San Mateo to serve as a Clinical Services Manager I – Nursing Supervisor at San Mateo Medical Center. In this role you will plan, organize, direct, and supervise the operations of a nursing unit and the float pool, ensuring high‑quality patient care and compliance with all regulations.

Base Pay Range

$ / yr – $ / yr

Responsibilities
  • Manage 24/7 operations of the Nursing Team, Medical Services Assistants Float Pool, and Staffing Coordinator.
  • Provide training, coaching, and counseling to nursing staff.
  • Participate in hospital‑wide continuous improvement activities.
  • Maintain regulatory readiness and quality of care standards.
  • Collaborate with physicians, administrators, and other disciplines.
  • Oversee budgeting, contract negotiation, and cost‑control initiatives.
  • Represent the department on committees and work groups.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate
  • Minimum 2 years of charge‑nurse experience or 1 year of nursing management in an accredited acute care hospital.
  • Background in ICU/ED with recent nursing experience of at least 1 year.
  • Ability to manage 24/7 operations and resolve conflict with staff, patients, and families.
  • Strong organizational skills and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Examples of Duties
  • Develop and implement goals, policies, and procedures within a defined nursing area.
  • Select, supervise, train, and evaluate clinical and clerical staff.
  • Represent the department on committees and work groups.
  • Ensure continuous quality improvement and regulatory readiness.
  • Prepare cost estimates, monitor expenditures, and administer contracts.
  • Maintain effective relationships with external agencies and private providers.
  • Provide public information and supervise nursing standards enforcement.
  • Assist higher‑level management on nursing issues.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Licensure / Certification
  • Valid California RN license.
  • BLS and ACLS certificates approved by the American Heart Association.
Education and Experience
  • Combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
  • Typical qualification: 3 years of professional nursing experience in an accredited facility, with at least 1 year of supervisory experience.
Knowledge
  • Nurse Practice Act; nursing principles, safety, & infection control.
  • Community health care trends and research.
  • Program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Personnel training, supervision, and evaluation.
  • State and regulatory requirements for assigned units.
  • Acute psychiatric population treatment (if assigned).
  • Revenue streams and financial management of operating rooms (if assigned).
Skills / Abilities
  • Coordinate nursing services ensuring quality patient care.
  • Collaborate with county departments and external organizations.
  • Analyze service delivery problems and recommend solutions.
  • Prepare detailed reports, procedures, and contracts.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, patients, and the public.
  • Train staff and coordinate activities of contractors and volunteers.
  • Provide unit management during evenings, off‑hours, and weekends (if assigned).
  • Operate surgical scheduling systems (if assigned).
Application / Examination

Open & Promotional; anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County Superior Court employees with at least six months (1 040 hours) of continuous service may receive five points added to their score.

The examination consists of an interview (100 % weight). Depending on the number of applicants, an appraisal of education and experience may replace other examinations.

All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, and applicants must participate at their own expense.
