About The PositionThe Animal Services Department seeks a Shelter Veterinarian (Veterinary Surgeon) for the Jurupa, San Jacinto, and Thousand Palms locations.
This position will perform a wide range of duties including spay/neuter responsibilities in a clinic/mobile environment, perform various other small animal surgeries, and oversee medical care of impounded animals. The most competitive candidates will have shelter medicine and high volume spay/neuter experience (training available for motivated candidates interested in this field). Primary duties include sterilization surgeries (25-40/day) on shelter animals and privately owned pets, with opportunities for other soft tissue or orthopedic surgeries to improve animal quality of life and adoptability.
The veterinarian will also conduct examinations, develop and oversee treatment plans, and monitor the health of shelter animals.
The Shelter Veterinarian supervises registered veterinary technicians, animal care staff, and clerical personnel, focusing on contagious disease control, medical care, and the well-being of animals and the shelter population. Our team cares for over 40,000 animals annually within California's fourth most populous county.

Essential DutiesEducation: Graduation from an accredited veterinary school with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
Knowledge of: Modern veterinary practices, especially small animal treatment, surgery prep, disease testing, and laws/regulations related to animal care.
Ability to: Diagnose, treat, and perform surgeries on animals; communicate effectively with the public; prepare reports.
Physical Exposures: Work environment includes exposure to animal dander, fluids, and potentially aggressive animals. Assistance with euthanasia and animal lifting may be required.
License: Valid California veterinary license (or ability to obtain within 12 months). Valid California Driver's License required.
