Intern, R&D Undergraduate Year Round - Materials Chemistry Lab, OnsiteWe are seeking a year-round intern for laboratory maintenance, chemical management, and to support a project on chemical synthesis/characterization for energy applications. During the academic year, the intern will focus primarily on lab maintenance and chemical management, while during the summer, the role will shift to primarily synthesis, characterization, and R&D-focused work. Comprehensive training will be provided on safe handling and protocols for various classes of chemicals, including specialized techniques for air-sensitive materials.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Perform synthesis and characterization of air-sensitive materials and composites, review and assessment of literature data for incorporation in databases
Perform peroxide testing
Perform experiments and general laboratory support functions
Assist with sample preparation for spectroscopy, diffraction, and electron microscopy experiments at Sandia and at DOE User Facilities.
Due to the nature of this work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. About Our Team:
The Energy Materials Physics Department at Sandia is a multidisciplinary research organization specializing in the synthesis and characterization of novel materials for energy and national security applications. Projects in the department's research portfolio seek to understand and engineer materials that enable advanced energy technologies by linking atomic-scale structure, defects, and interfaces to macroscopic transport and performance in extreme environments. It encompasses discovery and optimization of materials for hydrogen storage and separations, including metal hydrides, high-entropy alloys, porous media, and getter materials for hydrogen isotopes, as well as development of plasma-facing and containment materials for next-generation fusion and fission reactors.
Researchers also study plasma-materials interactions and employ surface-sensitive techniques, including low energy ion scattering, to probe composition and…
