Description:
The Department of Public Safety supports the mission and goals of the University of San Diego by providing a full range of crime prevention and crime control services to contribute to the safety and security of the campus community. Our Public Safety Officers are responsible for a wide range of activities, including developing crime prevention programs, taking crime and accident reports, initiating investigations, responding to medical and fire emergencies, providing traffic control, and enforcing certain local and state laws, as well as rules developed by the University to address campus-related concerns.

Description:
Provides a wide range of services to the University community including crime prevention, crime control, parking control and furnishing aid and information to the campus community and visitors. Duties include responding to 911 emergency-style calls, investigating alarms, responding to crimes in progress and scenes of past crimes or incidents. The public safety officer will understand the diverse and cultural aspects of the University community.
The public safety officer performs duties in cooperation with the San Diego Police Department and local fire and medical services to minimize harm to victims, witnesses to crimes, and those responding or involved in emergency situations. Routine duties include responding to non-emergency calls for service, providing information, collaborating with student organizations, staff, faculty, and students residing in campus housing to reduce crime and fear, as well as, investigating and preparing written reports on crime, accidents, and injuries.

- Possess knowledge of the State of California’s laws, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to comply with all departmental uniform and equipment standards and knowledge in the use/care of firearms and the equipment issued by USD’s Department of Public Safety.
- Possess skill in the use of specific equipment and tools as identified under Tools and Equipment Used.
- Provide motor vehicle and foot patrol of off-campus roadways, walkways, parking lots, grounds, University buildings, and residential areas.
- Provide for the protection of life and property. Observe safety hazards and report them to the proper persons for correction.
- Make recommendations, when appropriate, which reduce or eliminate conditions that lend themselves to unsafe conditions or expose the University and personal property to theft and damage.
