Overview
The Athletic Director coordinates and monitors the day-to-day activities of the middle school sports program at JLS Middle School with guidance from the Recreation Coordinator. The position is on-site at JLS Middle School and involves direct interaction with participants, coaches, parents, school staff and city staff. Provides strong customer service to students, parents, coaches, league participants, City of Palo Alto staff, and school administration.
Assists the Recreation Coordinator with recruiting coaches and may help create new sports activities for the Middle School Athletics Program. Programs run September–May, aligning with the school year.
- Verbal and written communication with parents, coaches, league members, school staff, and city staff
- Plan and coordinate practice and game schedules with school-specific coaches and sports league athletic directors
- Recruit coaches for all sports programs offered
- Facility and field set-up for sports programs
- Maintain inventory of sport-specific items and jerseys
- Ensure facility is maintained and safety procedures are followed
- Monitor practices and games
- Scorekeeper for home games
- On-time and available Monday through Friday between the majority hours of 2-7 pm
- Office location at a Palo Alto Middle School
- Reports to Recreation Coordinator overseeing Middle School Athletics programming
- Other duties as assigned
- Two years of experience and specialized skills or advanced certifications in a related field including:
Summer Camps;
Teen Outreach Leaders;
Coaches;
Substitute Teachers;
Sports Camp Leaders (CPR and First Aid);
Sport Officials (CPR and First Aid);
Pool Manager;
Gymnastics/Dance Instructors with Recreation Leader II requirements and Safety Certification and one of the following:
Professional Development Program II, Kinder Accreditation for Teachers or Movement Education and Learning Development - Strong writing and oral communication skills
- Strong leadership skills
- Experience working/volunteering with youth
- Knowledge of sports activities
- Medical stipend $3.64 per hour
- Sick leave: 0.03 hour of sick leave for each hour worked
- PARS Retirement Plan
- SEIU Hourly position with limited benefits, budgeted to not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year; hours per week and schedule determined by assignment
