The maintenance worker performs routine, entry‑level duties related to the maintenance of the state’s roadways and facilities. Responsibilities are performed under direct supervision. MoDOT will bring candidates onto the team as entry‑level, intermediate, or senior level, based on your skills and experience. WhatYou’ll Do
- Maintain state highway systems, including filling roadway joints and cracks, patching potholes, flagging and directing traffic, setting up traffic‑control devices, loading, unloading, spreading, and hauling materials. Cleaning and clearing ditches and removing trash and debris from roadsides.
- Maintain, clean, and repair state highway facilities: repair and replace road signs and guardrails, clean curbs and gutters, paint buildings and equipment, and service equipment and machinery.
- Operate vehicles to transport employees, equipment, machinery, and materials; warn oncoming traffic, plow snow, spread ice‑control materials; mow right‑of‑way using tractor mower and hand tools; operate auger, trencher, backhoe, forklift, and various trucks (dump, aerial boom, bucket, platform).
- Repair bridge decks (full and partial) and drains, clean bridge bents/caps at heights on ladders or utilizing scaffolding.
- Install signs including structural and large overhead signs; inspect truss signs; pour concrete sign footings; weld and cut steel sign posts; repair and maintain break‑away and overlay signs.
- High School Diploma or GED/HiSET
- Valid Driver’s License
- Passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam and completion of the driving portion with tanker endorsement, no air‑brake restriction (Class B), and interstate status (Excepted or Non‑Excepted) within 60 days of hiring.
- Successful completion of a work‑simulation examination and a medical‑physical examination.

- Requires significant physical stamina and endurance, including moving materials by hand, operating hand tools, and performing stationary flagging.
- Outdoor work with exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and adverse environmental characteristics; risk of injury in heavy‑traffic areas, near heavy equipment or machinery, and with hazardous chemicals or materials.
- May require overtime and nighttime work. May require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice‑control materials.
