Working Conditions- May be exposed to loud noise, dust, chemicals, extreme weather, great heights, confined spaces, uneven & unstable terrain, and vehicle traffic.
- Required to wear all personal protective equipment and follow all policies and procedures.
- Work rotating or irregular shifts, including weekends, nights, holidays, overtime, and after‑hour emergencies.
- Operate and service heavy equipment requiring a Class A commercial driver’s license with tank (N) endorsement under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor.
- Perform highway, structures, construction, and landscape maintenance work.
- When not operating specific equipment, perform duties outlined for Caltrans Equipment Operator I, Highway or Landscape Maintenance Worker, and other related highway maintenance tasks.
- Maintain knowledge of all mandated safety training, policies, and standards; comply with departmental training and safe work practice requirements.
- May be assigned to other operations units or geographic areas as needed.
- Overnight travel out of town up to 80% of the time may be required.
- Eligibility determined by your score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II examination; must be on the California state examination list.
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a valid unrestricted Class A commercial driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.
- Must pass a drug screening prior to hire.
- Minimum qualifications listed in the Classification Specification must be met (education, license, or certificate).
- Applicants must provide unofficial transcripts/diplomas or equivalency evaluations for foreign credentials.
- Valid California CDL (CDL number, class, expiration date, endorsements, restrictions).
- Drug screening required prior to hire.
- Valid unrestricted Class A commercial driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.
