Pharmacy Technician
Reports to:
Chief Pharmacist, Staff Pharmacist
Status:
Non-Exempt
This full-time position (may consider part-time) is located at 1507 N Main St, Mitchell, SD. Must be available to rotate 8‑hour shifts Monday through Friday and every 5th Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
SummaryThe Pharmacy Technician acts as a patient advocate by ensuring that patients follow their drug therapy plans as prescribed. Assist the Chief Pharmacist/Pharmacist in preparation and distribution of prescription medications in accordance with Lewis Drug policy and state/national regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide prompt, friendly customer service to all patients and customers throughout the store
- Learn and follow Lewis Drug policies and procedures daily
- Establish and maintain good relationships with physicians and other healthcare providers
- Answer patient questions and troubleshoot/resolution promptly
- Answer phone calls promptly and politely
- Assist in all customer service situations and complete customer transactions using the register
- Collect and maintain pertinent information from patients to fill prescriptions accurately and efficiently
- Maintain confidentiality of patients’ private medical information according to HIPAA
- Process new and refill prescriptions within scope of practice
- Prepare paperwork and compile medications for delivery; mail out orders when needed
- Manage and serve drive‑thru patients efficiently (if applicable)
- Report any medication error to proper personnel
- Log into various software systems to perform daily technician functions
- Perform daily maintenance of automated devices
- Stock supplies, clean work area, prepare pharmacy for next day’s operations
- Promote Lewis initiatives and represent Lewis positively to patients and communities
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Chief Pharmacist/Pharmacist
- Ability to learn basic drug terminology
- Understand differences between brand and generic drugs
- Perform basic pharmaceutical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, simple algebra)
- Multitask, pay attention to detail
- Work effectively as part of a team and independently
- Good organizational and time‑management skills
- Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
- Learn new software systems and enter data accurately and efficiently
- Dependable attendance and job performance
- Initiative to plan and complete daily activities in coordination with pharmacy team
- State of Iowa Requirements
- Register with the state Board of Pharmacy (BOP)
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Must be registered prior to first day worked
- Become a nationally certified pharmacy technician within 1 year of BOP registration (PTCB certification recommended)
- State of Minnesota Requirements
- Register with the state Board of Pharmacy (BOP)
- Must be 18 with high school diploma or GED
- Must be registered prior to first day worked
- Complete BOP-approved Lewis training within 1 year of BOP registration
- State of South Dakota Requirements
- Register with the state Board of Pharmacy
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Must be registered within 30 days of employment
- Additional considerations for all states:
- Completion of an approved/accredited pharmacy technician program (desired but not required)
- Complete yearly CE requirements to maintain active license (or as required per state)
- Additional pharmacy technician credentials/endorsements encouraged but not required
- Stand for long periods, move quickly between workstations
- Use hands, wrists, arms for manipulating small items
- Move about the pharmacy to access supplies from varying heights
- Lift/move items up to 50 lb occasionally, up to 20 lb frequently, up to 10 lb constantly
- Vision from less than 20 inches to greater than 20 feet with or without correction; depth perception, color vision, field of vision required
- Communicate verbally with staff and patients
- Handle multiple tasks in fast‑paced setting (filling scripts, answering phones, waiting on patients)
