Job Description & How to Apply Below

At Flourish Wellness + Birth Co.., we believe birth is a beautiful, transformative experience, and that every family deserves compassionate, individualized, and evidence-based care.

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Registered Nurse to join our small, supportive birth team in a PRN capacity.

Our birth nurses play an incredibly meaningful role in caring for mothers, babies, and families throughout labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. We value nurses who bring not only strong clinical skills and sound judgment, but also a genuine passion for physiologic birth, informed decision-making, and the unique experience of out-of-hospital birth care.

While Labor & Delivery experience is strongly preferred, it is not required. We recognize that nurses from emergency medicine, critical care, NICU, and other inpatient settings bring valuable skills and perspectives to our team. If you have a strong nursing foundation, a heart for supporting families, and an interest in learning more about birth center care, we would love to hear from you!

This position offers a flexible PRN schedule, the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with families, and the chance to work alongside an experienced and collaborative team of Certified Nurse Midwives and birth nurses.

JOB SUMMARY

The PRN Birth Center Registered Nurse provides safe, compassionate, and individualized nursing care for maternal and newborn patients in an out-of-hospital birth center setting.

Working collaboratively with Certified Nurse Midwives and other members of the birth team, the RN supports families throughout labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period while honoring Flourish’s philosophy of physiologic birth, trauma-informed care, informed consent, education, and empowerment.

Our nurses are an essential part of creating a calm, supportive, and safe environment where families feel respected, informed, and confident in their birth experience.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
  • Active RN license in the State of South Dakota, or pending licensure.
  • Current BLS certification, or willingness to obtain prior to providing patient care.
  • Current NRP certification, or willingness to obtain during onboarding.
  • Previous Labor & Delivery experience is strongly preferred and will receive priority consideration, but is not required.
  • Previous inpatient nursing experience, especially Emergency Department, ICU, Critical Care, or NICU experience, will also receive strong consideration.
  • Previous experience with community birth, out-of-hospital birth, maternal-newborn nursing, or postpartum care is valued but not required.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills, sound nursing judgment, and the ability to remain calm and respond effectively during emergencies.
  • Genuine interest in physiologic birth, family-centered care, and supporting the out-of-hospital birth model.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing education, emergency preparedness, and training specific to birth center nursing.

We understand that birth center nursing is a unique specialty. We welcome nurses who are eager to learn, grow, and bring their previous clinical experience into this meaningful area of care.

PRN SCHEDULING AND ON-CALL EXPECTATIONS

This is a flexible PRN, on-call position designed to support our birth team while allowing nurses to maintain other professional and personal commitments.

  • Approximately 3–5 on-call shifts per month.
  • Weekend call rotation approximately every 4th–6th weekend.
  • Holiday coverage is shared among the birth nursing team, generally requiring no more than one holiday per year.
  • Major and minor holidays rotate, and some years may not require any holiday coverage.
