Water Operator

Job Overview

This position is responsible for performing specialized duties in the operation of a water treatment plant and water distribution system. Water Operator Certification (Level I, II, or III) is preferred, but applications will also be accepted for non-certified workers who have the ability to become state-certified when eligible.

• Operate equipment to control water flow and maintain proper operating levels.
• Service, maintain, operate and repair facilities and equipment including pumping devices.
• Install, repair, and maintain the water distribution system and fire hydrants throughout the City.
• Respond to after-hours emergencies.

• Basic skills typically associated with a high school education and sufficient experience to understand basic principles of water distribution and maintenance system such as an apprenticeship or experience working.
• Valid SD driver’s license.
• Ability to earn appropriate state-certified water license when eligible
  .
• CDL not required but helpful.

Pay scale moves through the pay scale by passing State Operators Certification Courses. A non-certified worker anticipated starting wage is $20.974 (2025) $21.603 (2026) per hour;
Operator I entry level wage is $24.324 (2025) $25.053 (2026) per hour;
Operator II entry level wage is $25.555 (2025) $26.322 (2026) per hour;
Operator III entry level wage is $26.849 (2025) $27.654 (2026) per hour.
