Dental Assistant – Part‑time

Mobile Metro County Jail, Mobile, Alabama

Shifts:

3–10 hours per week.

Overview

We are hiring a Correctional Dental Assistant to provide dental care to incarcerated individuals. New graduates are encouraged; training will be provided.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for dental procedures, assist with treatments, and maintain patient records.
  • Coordinate dental services and assist the dentist with patient care, instruments, supplies, documentation, and support of the dental department.
  • Assist the dentist during treatment by providing instruments, materials, retraction, or suction.
  • Ensure all dental equipment is properly maintained and in good working order; keep the dental suite clean and well‑stocked.
  • Sterilize and disinfect equipment and tools.
  • Assist in triage, dental sick‑call requests, scheduling appointments, managing patient records, and performing other administrative tasks.
  • Explain dental procedures and oral hygiene practices to patients.
  • Take and develop x‑rays and assist with laboratory functions.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a one‑ or two‑year dental assistant program at a vocational school or community college.
  • Unrestricted certification as a Dental Assistant with appropriate ongoing training.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • CPR certification (obtainable).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary or confidential information.
  • Display integrity, professionalism and adherence to a code of conduct and all facility correctional‑healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening.
Physical Capabilities

Ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 lb), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks such as CPR while maintaining balance and endurance throughout the shift.
