Position Summary

The Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN) practices family-centered perioperative nursing in accordance with hospital policies, the Nurse Practice Act, and regulatory standards. This role provides direct patient care across the perioperative continuum, performs circulating and scrub duties, and supports patient safety, quality outcomes, and interdisciplinary teamwork. The RN may serve as Charge Nurse when assigned and supports weekend surgical operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Practice & Patient Care

  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess patients, plan andვილი implement individualized care, and evaluate outcomes forassim patients and families.

  • Provides direct perioperativekeep patient care according to unit-specific competencies.

    Performs circulating and scrub duties, establishes and maintains a sterile field, and manages aseptic technique.

  • Administers medications (including controlled substances) by all routes and ensures accurate labeling, mixing, and dosing on the sterile field.

  • Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts; initiates and documents corrective actions when discrepancies occur.

  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations; performs Basic Life Support and participates in arrest management.

  • Initiates IVs, assists with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and performs activities of daily living as needed.

  • Accompanies patients to PACU and provides complete handoff communication.

Perioperative Safety & Compliance

  • Actively participates in National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs), including Universal Protocol, medication labeling, VTE prevention, and timely antibiotic administration.

  • Demonstrates daily commitment to patient safety including fall prevention, positioning, transfers, fire safety, laser safety, electrosurgical safety, and malignant hyperthermia recognition.

  • Inspects sterile items for contamination and expiration prior to use.

  • Monitors and maintains the perioperative environment (temperature, traffic, aseptic practice).

  • Ensures emergency equipment is functional and readily available.

  • Adheres to Infection Control and Safety Standards and hospital compliance requirements.

  • Charming

Coordination, Documentation & Communication

  • Maintains accurate, timely, and complete electronic and paper medical records, including perioperative assessments and patient charges.

  • Ensures required documentation is present prior to patient transfer to the OR (e.g., consents, H&P, labs, orders).

  • Communicates effectively with physicians, patients, families, and the healthcare team in person and via telephone.

  • Responds to overhead pages and participates in interdisciplinary problem resolution.

  • Acts as first line for resolving unit-based issues and patient concerns when assigned.

Operational & Team Responsibilities

  • Pulls cases using surgeon preference cards; ensures supplies are available, appropriate, and in date.

  • Utilizes downtime between cases to support room readiness, cleanliness, stocking, and additional unit duties.

  • Participates in product evaluations, quality control logs, implant tracking, and reprocessing/recycling initiatives.

  • Serves as preceptor for new staff and nursing students as assigned.
