Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and one year computer operations experience. Successful completion of 1,250 classroom hours of college level computer related course work in an accredited vocational or technical school; or completion of a one year program of study in electronic data processing at an accredited vocational/technical school may substituted for the required experience.

The University of South Alabama’s Computer Services Center is seeking to hire a Computer Operator I. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.

• Monitors and maintains the availability, reliability, and security of critical systems and infrastructure for the University and Health Systems.
• Monitors systems, responds to incidents, logs user reported problems, provides technical support, and escalates critical issues such as network outages and security alerts to appropriate teams for resolution.
• Maintains logs to ensure effective shift handovers and generates after action logs documenting incidents, changes, security events, and other operational activities.
• Monitors operations of data center systems and assists with coordinating maintenance activities for data center equipment and infrastructure including environmental systems, UPS systems, generators, power distribution and cabling.
• Assists with the installation and replacement of data center equipment including network hardware, servers, storage arrays, and other data center system components as directed.
• Ensures secure handling, proper logging, and appropriate data destruction for physical media such as removable storage devices, tape backups, and disk drives.
• Serves as the primary point of contact and liaison for third-party vendors, technicians, and University and Health system personnel needing physical access to data center equipment, including escorting them and assisting with power and cabling.
• Conducts routine system support including software updates and security patches.
• Operates peripheral equipment including tape drives, printers, diagnostic tools, etc.
• Remains on 24‑hour call; stays on campus or returns to campus as specified to ensure comprehensive coverage during university closures, such as weather events.
• Moves equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. and heavier equipment with assistance.
• Regular and prompt attendance.
• Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required.
• Related duties as required.
