Part-Time Instructor of Non-Credit English as a Second Language (ESL) – School of Language Arts and Education – Modesto Junior College

Site: Modesto Junior College

Salary: Hourly Range: $78.15 – $124.94 (Doctorate Range: $92.09 – $128.22). Part‑time faculty office hours paid at a flat rate of $30 per hour.

Benefits: Not eligible for district benefit programs (except Workers’ Compensation).

Scope of Assignment: The successful candidate will join an English as a Second Language program that develops curriculum responsive to student needs, increasing completion rates through strategies focused on equity.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages; or a bachelor’s degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, a foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech.
  • Certificate in teaching English as a second language (may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment).
  • At least one year of experience teaching English as a second language in an accredited institution.
  • Or possession of a full‑time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in English as a second language.

Knowledge of and ability to assess the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Sensitivity to the challenges faced by a diverse student population.

Physical and Mental Standards
  • Mobility: ability to sit or stand for long periods, move about an office, and reach above and below desk level.
  • Dexterity: fine manipulation sufficient to operate a keyboard, handle papers, write, and take notes.
  • Lifting: occasional lifting of items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Visual: close vision sufficient to read documents, files, and computer screens; ability to adjust focus frequently.
  • Hearing/Talking: ability to hear normal speech, speak and hear on the telephone, and speak in person.
  • Emotional/Psychological: ability to make decisions, concentrate, handle frequent deadlines, and engage in public contact.

Responsibilities
  • Teach lower division college courses in Non‑credit English Language, including online, evening, and Saturday assignments.
  • Advance equitable student learning through exemplary instruction aligned with course outlines.
  • Inform students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance expectations.
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations; inform students of their academic progress.
  • Maintain attendance, scholastic, and other records per policy deadlines.
  • Develop, implement, and assess student‑learning outcomes; use results for improvement.
  • Engage in data inquiry and self‑assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity.
  • Participate in mandatory professional development (FLEX requirements).
  • Maintain current knowledge of subject matter and effective teaching/learning strategies.
  • Adhere to professional conduct and ethical standards.
