Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

The Career Advisor reports to the Director of Recruitment and Programming and provides career counseling and guidance on job markets and prospects to students and alumni. Career advisors of all levels manage internal career programming for students including individual counseling and strategizing, document review, and workshops. Career advisors of all levels build on existing relationships with legal employers to identify employment opportunities.

The Career Advisor or Senior Career Advisor will work with all McGeorge School of Law students and alumni, including JD, LLM , MPP , MPA , and MSL students.

Essential Functions

Advising:

  • Advise students and alumni about current market trends regarding legal and alternative employers; research and develop expertise in distinct practice areas or market segments, including legal and law-related policy employment and networking opportunities, to be a resource for other staff members, students, and alumni.
  • Counsel students and alumni on career planning and job search strategies, including self-assessment, networking, and skills development; review resumes and cover letters and conduct mock employment interviews and interview coaching.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in specialized career services management software to input counseling notes, review job postings, plan events, and run reports.

Employment Initiative:

  • Actively participate in employment data-related activities, including collecting, analyzing, and maintaining department and job placement statistics as required by the ABA , NALP , and US News.
  • Develop programming to support recent graduates throughout their first year after graduation.

Alumni Support:

  • Develop and maintain employment projects and initiatives for recent graduates; counsel alumni per advising responsibilities above; maintain and increase Alumni Advisor Network in collaboration with the Advancement department and other CSO staff members.
  • Create and execute career skills programs, professional development workshops, and other career development events and trainings for students and alumni.
  • Manage special projects and programs such as PIPS Day, Diversity Fellowships, Peggy Browning Fund Conferences and Fellowships, Post-Grad Fellow Bar Support programs, and Mock Interview Programs.
  • Oversee co-sponsorship opportunities and collaborations with external and internal groups to host career-related events on and off campus.
  • Develop content on career advising topics for the CSO blog and social media platforms and create and edit digital handouts and resources.
  • Author relevant articles for national publications and/or present at regional and national conferences.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
This position serves as Campus Security Authority ( CSA ) as outlined by the Clery Act. CSAs have federally mandated responsibilities to report crimes that were disclosed to them.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) Degree from an ABA approved law school
  • Admission to a U.S. Bar
  • A California law license is preferred, but not required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of legal practice experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of the legal profession, the legal employment market, and career options for law students and attorneys.
  • Excellent counseling skills.
  • Ability to guide, counsel, and establish an excellent rapport with students and alumni to assist them in meeting their career…
