Sylvan Veterinary Hospital offers externship opportunities for veterinary students at AVMA-accredited veterinary schools. Externships are an excellent way for students to gain practical experience and apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world setting. The provision of stipends and the availability of housing make these externships more accessible to students, which is a valuable support.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be a current veterinary student at an AVMA-accredited veterinary school.
  • Priority scheduling is given to students in their clinical years on official externship blocks for school credit.
  • Must provide proof of professional liability insurance. SAVMA members may qualify for no-cost insurance.
Externship Details
  • Externships are offered in partnership with Sylvan Veterinary Hospital and Standiford Veterinary Center.
  • They offer 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-week externship opportunities, providing flexibility to accommodate different student schedules and interests.
  • Students will receive a study guide and recommended reading materials based on the length of their externship.
  • A minimum commitment of 40 hours per week is expected, ensuring students gain valuable hands‑on experience.
  • Housing is available for students if needed, reducing the financial burden of travel and lodging expenses.
  • A stipend is provided to help offset the costs associated with the externship.
