Campus Safety Officer - Central Services
Location: Modesto Junior College, Modesto, CA
Site: Yosemite Community College District / Central Services
Salary: $4,698 – $5,996 Classified Salary Schedule)
Employment: 40 hours per week, 12 months per year (Friday through Tuesday 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm; swing shift; Wednesdays and Thursdays off)

Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, monitors and patrols district facilities, property, and offices to control campus security, parking and related issues; responds to alarms and requests for assistance; investigates and enforces district rules, regulations and legal infractions concerning the protection of persons and property; observes, reports, and maintains security of the college; performs related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsClassified Campus Security Officer Series, journey-level patrol, response and enforcement duties. Not a lead officer; does not supervise other employees.
SupervisionWorks under general supervision of a Campus Security Officer Supervisor; works alone on routine assignments and checks with supervisor on non‑routine or uncertain situations.
Minimum Qualifications- Knowledge of policies, rules, regulations, legal provisions concerning campus control, security, property protection and student behavior.
- Crowd control procedures and drug detection.
- Detention and search procedures in district facilities.
- Legal rights of citizens and students.
- Safe campus supervision methods.
- Traffic control principles and procedures.
- Patrol and surveillance methods and techniques.
- Interview and interrogation techniques.
- Self‑defense techniques.
- Report writing and record keeping.
- Occupational hazards and safety practices.
- Public and human relations skills.
- Relevant federal, state and local codes, laws and regulations including California vehicle and penal codes.
- Ability to work tactfully, diplomatically and with good judgment.
- Enforce campus rules, parking, traffic ordinances.
- Perform day and night patrol, evening and weekend supervision.
- Apply and interpret federal, state, local codes.
- Respond quickly in emergencies.
- Analyze situations for emergency action.
- Observe and report violations.
- Detain, interrogate and interview.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Establish working relationships with coworkers.
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of public or private security, military security, law‑enforcement or comparable services.
- Completion of basic POST training may substitute for one year of experience.
- Background investigation, reference checks and state criminal history report required prior to employment.
- Perform campus patrol and parking lot control; check doors and windows; identify safety hazards.
- Receive security information via phone, radio or other sources; respond to campus incidents.
- Observe, report and investigate suspicious activity.
- Respond to fire and intruder alarms; monitor 9‑1‑1 calls; contact outside agencies as needed.
- Assist traffic flow; direct visitors to parking; escort students, faculty, visitors.
- Issue citations for parking violations; counsel students on rules.
- Detain persons in emergencies; involve law‑enforcement.
- Transport district funds as directed.
- Assist injured students; render first aid; refer to health or administrative offices.
- Identify persons on campus; investigate identity as needed.
- Prepare incident reports; maintain security logs.
- Maintain control at campus events; enforce conduct and safety regulations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Valid California driver license.
- Valid CPR and First Aid certificate.
- Complete Education Code Section 38001.5 training within 3 months of appointment.
- Mobility: ascend/descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps; walk or stand extended periods.
- Dexterity: full range of motion upper extremities; operate equipment.
- Lifting: frequently lift up to 50 lb.; occasionally up to 75 lb.
- Vision: close vision sufficient for reading documents and computer screens.
