Salary & Incentives- 3% COLA effective 7/1/2026
- 2.5% Education Incentive – Bachelor’s Degree
- 5% Education Incentive – Master’s Degree
- Plan, prioritize, and review the work of crews at job sites.
- Develop schedules and methods to accomplish job site goals efficiently.
- Participate in evaluating staff activities, recommending improvements.
- Provide on‑job training to employees and correct deficiencies.
- Identify equipment needs, perform daily vehicle inspections, document safety.
- Perform minor repairs on equipment; check fluid levels; grease moving parts.
- Operate a backhoe and/or truck/backhoe unit or crane in construction operations.
- Perform additional construction and maintenance tasks such as concrete work, truck driving, asphalt spreading, jack hammering, and repair activities when equipment is not in use.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co‑workers, other City employees, and the public.
- Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.
- Perform related duties as assigned (Marginal Functions).
- Two years of responsible experience equivalent to Equipment Operator II in the City of Modesto.
- High School diploma or GED equivalency.
- Possession of a Class A or Class B Commercial California driver’s license with appropriate endorsements within 60 days of appointment.
- Valid crane operator certificate, issued by the National Commission of Crane Operators, within six months of assignment.
Online Testing:
January 14, 2026 through January 20, 2026 at 5 PM.

Working ConditionsWork is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year‑round basis, subject to typical street or field noise and exposure to loud equipment and machinery. Some positions may be assigned to remote locations. Positions may require occasional overtime/holiday/weekend work. Depending upon assignment, may require standby work assignments. Travel is rare.
