Position: Assistant United States Attorney – Criminal

Overview

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of Illinois (CDIL) is seeking to fill two Assistant United States Attorneys positions (AUSAs), one in the Moline, IL office and one in the Peoria, IL office. Both positions are in the criminal division and involve investigation and prosecution of a wide variety of federal criminal cases, including violent crime, crimes against children, immigration, human trafficking, drugs, national security, firearms trafficking, and white collar crime.

AUSAs work in cooperation with colleagues and with federal, state, and local law enforcement Officials. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Locations: Moline, IL and Peoria, IL. Salaries and locality adjustments vary by location.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate and prosecute federal criminal cases in the criminal division.
  • Collaborate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and with colleagues in the office.
  • Perform duties that may evolve in complexity as training and experience progress.
Requirements and Qualifications Conditions of employment
  • You must be a United States citizen or national.
  • J.D. degree and active membership in the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
  • Initial appointment conditioned upon satisfactory preemployment adjudication including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing; continued employment subject to a favorable background investigation.
  • You must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof.
  • You must register for Selective Service if applicable.
Qualifications

Required: J.D. degree (or equivalent), active bar membership, and at least 2 years post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or relevant experience. Superior oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision in a demanding environment.

Preferred: Strong academic credentials, advocacy, legal research and writing skills, and ability to articulate case-related issues; ability to work collaboratively with the office, client agencies, and others. United States citizenship is required.

Education

J.D. degree from an accredited institution.

Salary and Benefits

Salary ranges vary by location and are determined administratively based on experience. Locality pay is included in the stated ranges for each city. This is a position within the federal excepted service with benefits appropriate to a temporary appointment, including paid leave, holidays, telework where applicable, life and health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Relocation expenses are not authorized.

All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis and may be extended or made permanent without further competition.
