The Staff Accountant will perform payroll processing, accounting, and compliance tasks to support Unity Bay’s financial operations.
Responsibilities and Duties- Process bi‑weekly and monthly payroll cycles.
- Maintain proper documentation, withhold, reconcile, and ensure submission of levies, garnishments, insurance with holdings, 401(k) deferrals, and loans.
- Perform monthly reconciliations of employee benefits and deductions.
- Ensure accuracy and timely filing of all payroll tax returns and year‑end W‑2s.
- Coordinate with Human Resources for all changes to employee records and onboard new clients in the payroll process.
- Reconcile bookkeeping ledgers.
- Manage fixed‑asset list and record depreciation monthly.
- Submit DHHS billing weekly and reconcile reports as income is received.
- Prepare and post weekly deposits.
- Complete monthly journal entries as assigned.
- Prepare month‑end closing entries and reconciliations.
- Assist with grant compliance and reimbursement requests.
- Prepare supporting schedules for the annual financial audit.
- Assist with Accounts Payable as necessary.
- Maintain confidentiality and secure handling of sensitive financial and payroll information.
- Ensure all financial records and personnel files meet HUD, GAAP, State, Federal, and Agency standards and requirements.

Compensation is based on qualifications, including education and relevant experience.
Typical Physical DemandsThe Staff Accountant may be required to lift objects weighing less than 50 pounds. The position requires effective verbal and written communication with individuals served, families, co‑workers, and visitors. The Staff Accountant must be able to move intermittently throughout the day and perform activities such as kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, repetitive motions, standing, bending, walking, sitting, and stooping.
Typical Working ConditionsThe Staff Accountant works in an office setting with standard office equipment (computers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, 10‑key calculator). Other duties may require working in different program areas. Exposure to communicable diseases and physical assault is possible. The Staff Accountant represents the agency positively and establishes effective relationships with vendors, staff, and visitors.
Performance Requirements- Write the English language legibly and relate harmoniously with co‑workers and families.
- Follow directions and work independently to meet State, Federal, and Agency deadlines.
- Solid understanding of debits and credits.
- Proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word, and Adobe.
- Independent judgment and full‑cycle payroll knowledge.
- Payroll tax reporting, payroll reconciliations (benefits, garnishments), and accounting/bookkeeping skills.
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
ExperienceMinimum of 5 years of solid experience with full‑cycle payroll and accounting/bookkeeping, or equivalent. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics, UKG, or Sylogist is a plus.
OtherThe candidate must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License and maintain an acceptable driving record.
