About Echo Pond

Echo Pond Environmental Education Centre is a unique hub for environmental education and outdoor adventure. Nestled in the beautiful boreal “Fog Forest” of the Avalon Peninsula (about 1 hour 15 minutes from St. John’s), we host 2-day overnight field trips where school groups engage in hands‑on, experiential learning to connect with nature and bring classroom lessons to life.

Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Environmental Educator to join our dynamic team. Working under the guidance of our Lead Environmental Educator, you will lead engaging activities—such as interpretive hikes, orienteering, shelter‑building, night hikes, storytelling, and campfires—that explore topics like climate change, biodiversity, ecosystems, and food sustainability. This is a great job for substitute teachers who are looking to supplement their income during the school year.

Position Type & Duration
  • Season: Spring 2026 (May-June with paid training April 29th-30th)
  • Shift Details: Shifts run from approximately 9:00 AM one day to 5:00 PM the next (overnight stay required).
  • Hours & Pay: Regular shifts of 24 hours at $17 per hour; overtime (over 40 hours/week) at $25.50 per hour.
  • Additional Perks: Meals are provided, and while own transport is preferred, carpooling opportunities may be available.

  • Program Delivery: Facilitate interactive, hands‑on learning activities during 2‑day overnight school field trips.

    Work closely with the Education Director and fellow educators to design and implement environmental programs.
  • Engagement: Create a positive, inclusive environment that sparks curiosity about nature and sustainability.
Qualifications & Desired Skills
  • Education & Experience: Pursuing or holding a degree/diploma in Environmental Studies, Geography, Natural Sciences, Education, or equivalent experience.
  • Child Engagement: Demonstrated ability (or strong interest) in working with children and leading educational activities.
  • Outdoor Passion: Comfortable being active and working in a wilderness setting.
  • Core Knowledge: Interest in and basic knowledge of ecology, sustainability, and environmental issues.
  • Personal Traits: Adaptable, motivated, caring, and a strong team player with excellent communication skills.
  • Certifications: Must have a valid First Aid Certificate and Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check.
