Job Description
You will be responsible for ensuring compliance, improving, and promoting the environmental performance of the mill. You will also lead the day‑to‑day operation of the Technical Lab to ensure safe, accurate, and timely analyses that support product quality, process control, and environmental compliance. This role is accountable for people leadership in a unionized environment, maintaining lab methods, equipment, and data integrity, and ensuring alignment with our Quality and ISO 14001:2015 (environmental management) requirements.
ResponsibilitiesEnvironmental & Process Compliance
- Provide enabling support within our mill to facilitate our ability to meet environmental performance objectives. This may include providing advice, training support, and other supporting tasks.
- Maintain and continually improve site‑wide ISO 14001:2015 EMS processes, including aspects/impacts, operational controls, internal audits, nonconformance/CAPA, and compliance evaluations.
- Act as the leading representative in the implementation of new regulatory requirements.
- Responsible for internal and external environmental reporting.
- Coordinate with Environmental and Operations teams to meet regulatory and corporate reporting timelines.
- Lead, coach, and schedule hourly lab technicians in a unionized setting; uphold the contract provisions, attendance, and performance management.
- Build capability through training, method qualification, and training.
- Foster a strong safety culture and adherence to lab SOPs, PPE, and risk controls.
- Manage daily workload, prioritization, and turnaround times for product QA testing and process analyses.
- Ensure readiness and reliability of lab assets through preventive maintenance, calibrations, and service.
- Own consumables/standards inventory, vendor coordination, and budget stewardship for the labs.
- Maintain robust sample handling, chain‑of‑custody, laboratory data integrity, and records retention.
- Validate and publish lab results; elevate deviations and support root cause analysis.
- Partner with Operations, Technical, and Maintenance to translate lab insights into process adjustments and corrective actions.
- Prepare summary reports and present lab performance, trends, and KPIs.
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental, Pulp & Paper, Chemical, Engineering, or related Science field.
- Supervisory/lead role experience in a unionized environment will be considered an asset.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments and shifting priorities.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong working knowledge of pulp and paper QA and process testing methods (e.g., TAPPI/ISO methods for pulp and paper properties) would be an asset.
- Environmental lab experience with common regulatory parameters.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001:2015 requirements and internal auditing.
