Monona Community Pool Lifeguard – Summer 2026

Under the general direction of the Aquatic Director and supervision of the pool managers and head lifeguards, Monona Pool lifeguards ensure the safety of all pool patrons. This is a limited-term, seasonal (summer) position beginning in June and ending in August. Hours for this position will vary from 15-40 per week and will include days, evenings, and weekends.

Wage Schedule
  • 1st year guard - $17.00/hour
  • 2nd year guard - $18.50/hour
  • 3rd year guard - $20.00/hour
  • 4th year guard - $21.50/hour
Responsibilities
  • Ensures the health, safety and welfare of those using the Monona Community Pool
  • Supervises the activities of pool patrons by enforcing rules and regulations
  • Performs pool maintenance and facility cleaning duties
  • Responds to emergency situations; administers first aid and primary care as needed
  • Assists the public as necessary by providing program information, answering public inquiries, handling or referring complaints, posting notices and interpreting pool rules and policies
  • Attends all mandatory in-service trainings as required by the Aquatic Director
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 15 years of age
  • Must be a proficient swimmer
  • Must have a current certification in Red Cross Lifeguard/ First Aid/ CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours including nights and weekends
  • Excellent customer service skills – this position serves as an ambassador for the City and must engage the public in a respectful, professional and positive manner
  • Additional Qualifications
  • Must have working knowledge of the principles and practices of Lifeguard Training, CPR and First Aid
  • Must be a proficient swimmer
  • Must be able to recognize visual and audible cues in order to identify swimmers in distress or in the process of unsafe behaviors
  • Must be able to remain alert and attentive to dangerous situations while sitting, standing, or walking for varying lengths of time
  • Must be able to react to emergency situations with quick movements and strenuous activity, including being able to assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with the general public and pool staff
  • Must be able to identify problems and determine when supervisor intervention is needed
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including high heat, humidity, and direct sun
  • Must be able to work with moderate to loud background noise
