Surgical Technologist 3 - Cardiovascular Surgery Job Description
The Surgical Technologist 3 prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures. Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patient during pre‑operation procedures. Performs pre‑operation preparations to the patient’s skin, body and medical equipment. May be required to transport patient to and from the operating room. Relies on education, years of experience and judgment to accomplish job. Works under general supervision.
Creativity and some latitude is expected to complete responsibilities.
Key responsibilities for the Surgical Technologist 3 include preparation, quality & patient safety, collaboration & teamwork, and other duties as assigned.
Surgical Case PreparationThis will have been satisfactorily performed when the surgical case is prepared according to the following standards:
- Proper equipment, instruments, and supplies are provided for procedures and specialty areas with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- A well organized sterile setup/field is maintained at all times, contributing to smooth operations with no more than 2 documented surgeon complaints annually.
- Anticipates and responds effectively by performing assignments in a timely and efficient manner with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- Proper sterile techniques are followed and maintains a sterile field at all times with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- Assistance is provided to the circulating RN with procedure/patient preparation with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- A working knowledge of autoclaves is followed and proper sterilization method for instruments selected at all times with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- A proper procedure counting of instruments, sponges and sharps is followed with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- Instrumentation is accurately checked prior to procedure for proper functionality and maintained throughout procedure with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- Capable of competently scrubbing complex cases across all facility specialities.
- Demonstrates superior knowledge of the surgical equipment and advances surgical instrumentation within major specialties.
Quality and patient safety responsibilities include:
- Appropriate procedure supplies and equipment for age specific needs is provided within specified guidelines with no more than 2 documented surgeon complaints annually.
- Patients are transported safely without delay with no more than 2 documented incidents annually.
- Assistance is provided in the positioning of patients with no more than 2 documented incidents annually.
- Recommended AORN guidelines are followed all the time with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
Collaboration and teamwork responsibilities include:
- Surgeon’s needs are anticipated by following case progress with no more than 2 documented surgeon complaints annually.
- Active participation in departmental improvement activities and staff meetings is provided with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- Assistance is proved to the OR staff with room turnovers to help decrease turnover times with no more than 2 documented corrective incident annually.
- Overhead pages are responded to in less than 3 minutes with no more than 2 documented incidents of late or non‑responses annually.
- Assistance with clerical OR desk duties after hours by answering phones or messages is provided with no more than 2 documented corrective incidents annually.
- Volunteers for call and late stay when needed.
- Actively responds to emergency situations and/or trauma procedures in the OR.
Additional duties:
- Coordinates with OR educator/OR manager to develop and present annual in‑services on equipment, instrumentation or surgical technique.
- Partners with various clinical programs to serve as a preceptor and mentor of clinical rotation students.
