Job DescriptionThe Patient Access Representative 1 – ED (PAR1) registers patients presenting to the Emergency Department, including traumas, stroke patients, disaster response patients, behavioral health, and direct admits to inpatient units. Responsibilities include validating patient identity, collecting ED‑specific screening information, coordinating with ED nurses to ensure timely triage, verifying insurance coverage, calculating patient co‑insurance and co‑pay, determining in‑network status post‑stabilization, and balancing cash.
The role requires professional communication with patients, families, physicians, and nurses, managing patient and visitor concerns during trauma and disaster situations, and maintaining knowledge of EMTALA and No Surprises Act regulations.
- Accurately register patients presenting to the ED and verify identity.
- Collect demographic, insurance, and guarantor information and input it into registration software.
- Coordinate with ED nurses to ensure patients are triaged in a timely manner.
- Verify insurance coverage, calculate patient financial responsibility, and collect co‑insurance, co‑pay, and deductibles.
- Determine in‑network and out‑of‑network status post‑stabilization and balance cash drawers.
- Communicate with patients, families, EMS, RN, and providers to resolve registration and insurance issues.
- Manage patient and visitor concerns during trauma and disaster events.
- Maintain compliance with EMTALA, HIPAA, and No Surprises Act regulations.
- Respond to disaster activation and work on‑site until conclusion of activation.
- Document each encounter in account notes to ensure cross‑function communication.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent; 1 year customer service experience or related certification (e.g., Certified Coder, Certified Medical Assistant).
- Advanced clerical and computer skills, critical thinking, and ability to work in high‑stress situations.
