School Counselor – Hardin High School (High School, school year)
Position OverviewThe person in this position will counsel individuals and provide group educational guidance. The counselor provides a problem‑solving service to students, families, and staff and may serve as a member of diagnostic teams or educational planning and placement committees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Provide personal counseling services for students, families, and groups to foster self‑understanding, responsibility, and decision‑making skills.
- Accept referrals and seek referrals for counseling and personal assistance.
- Assess and counsel students based on observations, conversations, and test results.
- Provide academic, personal, social, and career guidance to both individuals and groups of students.
- Orient new students to school procedures.
- Inform parents of available programs and confer with parents regarding student progress and school activities.
- Educate students and parents about coursework required for graduation and assist in developing a four‑year educational plan.
- Update information on student cumulative files and maintain records on inactive student files.
- Maintain school records, including a locked, confidential file set.
- Assist administration with standardized testing program; prepare test materials and interpret results.
- Consult with and serve as a resource for teachers, staff, and parents regarding developmental needs of students.
- Refer students to supportive personnel for additional services (e.g., speech therapist, school nurse, psychologist, other specialists).
- Provide group guidance activities and specialized guidance materials.
- Conduct and facilitate conferences with teachers, students, and parents; model appropriate conflict‑resolution behaviors.
- Understand and assist with interventions for at‑risk student behaviors.
- Attend 504/IEP meetings and serve as onsite contact for child protection and family crisis agencies.
- Serve as a resource to students and administrators regarding behavior and achievement.
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and referral agencies.
- Maintain knowledge of community support agencies to provide student assistance.
- Process school records for incoming and departing students.
- Coordinate information about students by maintaining and updating records.
- Collaborate with administrators and teachers to provide appropriate placement for students with special abilities and disabilities.
- Assist with inclusion needs within the school and district, as assigned.
- Contact parents for special meetings or needed signatures.
- Participate in the school‑based crisis team.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in school counseling.
- Valid Montana Teacher Certification.
- Counseling and Guidance Endorsement.
- Professional code of conduct within legal and ethical standards for school counselors.
- Effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community.
- Flexible in scheduling and planning.
- Clear and concise communication skills, oral and written.
- Ability to handle stressful situations.
- Confidentiality of employee and student matters.
- Awareness of district requirements and school board policies.
- Basic office machines (calculator, photocopier, fax, telephone/mail).
- Personal computer, tablet, and related software.

Work EnvironmentThe employee frequently sits, occasionally walks or stands, and may lift or move up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The role seldom involves routine work; it requires flexibility, social interaction, and time management. The physical demands described represent those required for essential duties. CompensationSalary Range (SY26-27): $43,063 – $69,444.
Credit on the salary schedule will be given for up to eleven (11) years contracted teaching experience. A bonus of $2,500.00 will be added for teachers holding an MA degree.
Teacher Loan Forgiveness ProgramHardin Public Schools qualify for federal Title 1 funds and the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program. Positions may also qualify for the Critical Teacher Shortage Loan Assistance Program.
