Probationary Period: Six (6) months
This position promotes public health by providing professional guidance in the inspection of a variety of venues including but not limited to food, lodging, and recreational facilities. Investigates and participates in the resolution of environmental complaints, nuisances, and hazards. Provides education and resources to establishments to support compliance and public health. Consults with medical professionals, law enforcement, code enforcement officers, and others.
Serves as an ex-officio member of the local Health Board and Lake Board, provides information on inspections, violations, and compliance issues. May testify in court in matters relating to actions taken against violators of public health statutes.
Field Inspections: Completes inspections, licensing, and enforcement of federal, state, and local codes/regulations for food, beverage and lodging establishments, schools, daycares, grocery stores, convenience stores, children’s camps, recreational campgrounds, public swimming pools, bathing beaches, splash parks, water and sewage treatment systems, septic systems, manufactured home parks, hospitals, nursing homes, long‑term and adult care facilities, diagnostic and treatment centers and various other sites which fall under the scope of health and public safety regulations.
Prepares inspection reports based on statutory and regulation compliance which cite violations, documents deficiencies, and recommends improvements. Provides education and information on environmental health matters to licensed facilities and the public. Enforces health protection standards as outlined by the State of Montana or Federal government guidelines. Recommends appropriate action against violators of health codes; enforces codes pertaining to inspection of licensed establishments.
Investigates and participates in the resolution of suspected cases of foodborne illness to determine common source, consults with operators regarding code requirements. Maintains current records of all activities, samples, etc.; prepares reports following inspections and investigations.
Analyzes and reviews plans for new or remodeled food service establishments and public accommodations for compliance with laws and regulations. Aids in correcting areas of noncompliance, coordinates permitting processes and conducts specialized inspections of food services provided for temporary events.
Environmental Analysis & Health ImpactsResponds to all assigned environmental and nuisance calls; conducts inspections and evaluations of potable, recreational (natural and artificial) and wastewater systems. Investigates and resolves health problems and nuisances concerning garbage, rodents, insects, and air quality. Operates a variety of monitoring instruments in obtaining or collecting environmental samples, submitting to laboratory for testing. Monitors air particulates and other elements known to be air pollutants.
Provides education and information on hazards in the environment that can impact health and makes recommendations on proper methods of control. Provides review of environmental assessments or property proposed to be subdivided; this includes review of proposed drinking water supply systems, onsite wastewater treatment systems, storm‑water drainage provisions, and solid waste provisions.
